Day 3

Today, we will take a tour of the Herald Dispatch. I'm so excited. It was one of my favorite activities last year. I really enjoyed working with the reporters. I can't wait to go on the job with one of them this year.

Day 2

Today was so much fun! We had a photography class and got to take pictures of campus. I think that this is the best way to see the campus. You get to look at the campus from a different perspective.

We also learned a lot in our other classes. The law perspective of journalism can be a little confusing because you have to figure out where the line has to be drawn.

I will definitely be watching closely for grammar mistakes in my own work as well as the work of others, and from now on, I will probably laugh everytime someone says, "...the Preamble to the Constitution..." because Dr. Arnold taught us that it is pointless to use phrases such as "more perfect" because you can't get any better than perfect. I heard this phrase so much in high school and never thought anything about the wording. Now, I almost feel a little silly for not catching on to something that seems like it should have been obvious.

The students at WMUL listened to my high school's radio show. They liked it, too. I was so excited. They did have a few ideas for the show and I can't wait to tell my former co-anchor the ideas so he can keep the program going next year while I'm at Marshall.

Peer Interview - Victoria Smith

Victoria Smith, 16, may have followed in the rest of her family's footsteps by attending Frankfort High School, but she will take another step and become the first in her family to attend college to major in journalism and mass communications. The junior has lived in Frankfort, Ky., her whole life, but loves traveling.

"I have been almost everywhere along the East Coast, although I would love to travel out of the country," she said. "I'm interested in Hispanic cultures, so I would prefer to travel to South America."

At Frankfort High School, Victoria participates in basketball and softball. She says that she has decided to take up archery, as well. "I want to try something different," Smith said.
Victoria developed a love for writing at an early age. She wrote imaginative stories starting at the age of 5, but as she grew older, she began to write her personal thoughts because writing makes her feel better.

Victoria's love for writing turned into an interest in journalism because attending a previous journalism camp at the University of Kentucky gave her experience in the field.

"I wasn't really interested in journalism, but after attending the camp," she said. "I thought, 'Hey, I might like this.'"

First Day of 2011 Journalism Workshop!

I'm so excited to be back to this year's journalism workshop. I haven't even been here a whole day yet, I'm already having a great time. Even though I did learn a lot about journalism last year, I have already learned some things that I didn't know. For example, thanks to Dr. Arnold, I probably won't be able to look at the Constitution ever again without thinking of its grammar mistakes.

This Past Week.....

I've been sooo busy since I came home from camp! I've been unpacking my stuff into my room in the new house nonstop.
Last Wednesday I went for my senior picture photo shoot.
Then band practice started on Thursday.
After band practice on Friday I went to the Regatta at Point Pleasant' riverfront to help with the dance-off that my dance group, Ohio River Dance sponsored.
We marched in two Fourth of July parades on Saturday - New Haven at 10 am, Mason at 11 am - then I had to be in Point Pleasant (thirty minutes down the road) by noon to dance with my dance group at the Regatta. When I got home I took a long nap and then helped make a fruit tray to take to a cookout, where I learned that I am horrible at playing cornhole. Then my family went back to the Regatta to watch the fireworks. They were so beautiful!
On Sunday, My family started making food for our cookout, after church. Then we went across the river to watch Middleport's Fourth of July parade.
Monday was my last day off because of the observance of the holiday and now I am wrapped up in band practice. Its my senior year of band, and I hope that its also my best year of band.

The Last Day of the Workshop

The week went by so fast! It was so much fun. I'm so glad that Professor Morris gave me the opportunity to take part in it. I learned so much about journalism that I wouldn't have gotten to learn. Plus, I met fifteen great new friends whom I wouldn't have met. This was also my first camp experience and I don't think I could have gotten a better one.

Fourth day of Journalism Workshop

Today has been interesting. I've never been able to start a story so talking about news and feature leads was really helpful. During photo manipulation, we got into some really strong debates over so many topics that went over into lunch. Afterward, we learned how to research information for a news article, which was also helpful.
